Works in Progress
The Reckoning
A work in progress evolving in real time, shaped by the psychological tension and emotional depth at the heart of my fiction.
Canadian‑born Essie Portman’s husband vanished without a trace. Two years later, she is drowning — in fear, in unanswered questions, in the alcohol that is no longer keeping her upright, and in dreams that trouble more than frightens her. She doesn’t understand why she’s drawn to the flaming jarrah box that keeps appearing in her sleep — only that it feels like a warning she can’t interpret.
A strange encounter at a local coffee shop changes everything — a woman inserts herself into Essie’s life with unsettling familiarity, hinting of intimate knowledge of her missing husband and knowing far too much about Essie herself. This woman, Rachael, draws Essie toward a darker world she never knew existed: the Fellowship, a fractured community steeped in instability, obsession, and criminal acts that have gone unchallenged for far too long.
Justice and his friends remain at Essie’s side, but the reckoning she faces is far larger than any of them imagined. As Rachael pulls Essie deeper into the Fellowship’s world, long‑buried criminal acts begin to surface — and Essie becomes the one positioned to expose them. Her fragile support system can’t shield her from what follows: a confrontation that draws her into a dangerous, escalating trap and forces her to face the truth that has been waiting for her all along.
